The following is a list of boating courses offered by the Sewanhaka Power Squadron for Spring, Summer, and Fall months.

America's Boating Course 3rd Edition: 

Take America’s Boating Class and learn the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation.

This course meets the legal requirements for NYS certification and covers the following:

Getting Started: boat terms and types, boat handling, anchoring, water sport safety, personal watercraft

What's Needed: equipment, regulations, law enforcement

Rules To Live By: aids to navigation, navigation rules, adverse conditions, marine radio

Piloting: (Coastal Navagation)

Piloting is the first of the navigational classes focusing on techniques for piloting a boat in coastal and inland conditions. The course emphasizes planning and checking along with the use of GPS for determining position, and introduces digital charting along with traditional charting, compass and dead reckoning skills. Plotting, labeling, use of the compass, aids to navigation and a host of related topics are included in this all-new approach to coastal and inland piloting.

Advanced Piloting: (Advanced Coastal Navagation) 

Advanced Piloting is the final part of the inland and coastal navigation series. This material continues to build on the base developed in Piloting, and includes practical use of additional electronic navigation systems and other advanced techniques for finding position. Among topics covered are: finding position using bearings and angles, collision avoidance using GPS and RADAR, what to do when the electronics fail, tides, currents and wind and their effect on piloting, and electronic navigation with GPS, chart plotters, RADAR, autopilots, etc. Application of course lectures takes place through practical in-class and at-home exercises

Paddle Smart - TBA

This seminar is intended for those about to join the sport and those considering purchasing paddling equipment.  In this course you will learn about the necessary safety equipment, cold water protection, basic kayak and canoe paddle strokes plus much more!

Mastering Rules of the Road - TBA

This seminar provides an explanation with examples of the 37 Rules of the Road for both the U.S. Inland Rules and the International Rules (COLREGS). It simplifies the sometimes complex laws relating to boat operation for the recreational boater.

Basic Weather and Forecasting - TBA

The safety and comfort of those who venture out on the water have always been weather dependent. This seminar serves as an introduction to the basics of weather and forecasting. It is a must for boaters who have never taken a weather course.

Knots, Bends & Hitches - TBA

This seminar is a hands-on "learn how to tie knots" program geared to a wide range of audiences. Participants learn about knots and learn to tie a set of the most useful knots.

Come Learn about the Proper Way to Anchor your Boat, Learn How Much "Rode" to let out, Different Types of Anchors, How to set your Anchor......

Boating Navigation Essentials

This workshop will cover using GPS to explain the principles of way point navigation and how it relates

to your charts. The basics of weather and forecasting will also be discussed, as well as the VHF/DSC

Marine Radio, a mainstay of coastal communicationsand essential for emergency communications.
