Boating Classes - Open to all. No charge for the classes, material fees may apply
All classes typically are from 7:30 - 9:30PM unless stated otherwise.
The following is a list of boating courses offered by the Sewanhaka Power Squadron for Spring and Summer of 2013 months. All classes begin at 7pm promptly and run 1-1/2 to 2 hours per night. Take America’s Boating Class and learn the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation. This course meets the legal requirements for NYS certification and covers the following:
- Getting Started: boat terms and types, boat handling, anchoring, water sport safety, personal watercraft
- What's Needed: equipment, regulations, law enforcement
- Rules To Live By: aids to navigation, navigation rules, adverse conditions, marine radio

Advanced Boating Classes
Take an advanced class in boating Seamanship covers basic deck seamanship, marlinspike (knots and ropes), anchoring and rafting, basic boat care and maintenance, and nautical and USPS customs and etiquette.

Nassua Community College
Piloting is the first and most basic navigation course, covering chart reading, course plotting, and basic coastal or inland navigation, including basic GPS usage. This course goes into more detail than the charting information covered in the basic boating courses. Date and Location -TBD
Advanced Piloting covers more advanced coastal navigation techniques, navigation in tides and currents, and more advanced GPS and Radar usage. Date and Location -TBD

Boaters must be at least 10 years of age. Children under 14 years of age must be
